TPP is what your shaman tried to warn you about.

You all know that I'm interested in shamanism and the development and evolution of memes. So it should come as no surprise that I've been enraptured by Twitch Plays Pokemon.

If you haven't heard of this week-old phenomena yet, here's an excellent introduction. Or read this article about how TPP has become a proxy battle for the internet's soul. If you're just interested in fanfic potential, I'd suggest starting with these comics, part 1 and part 2.

In the span of about a week, we have seen gods born, been assigned prophets, and had entire pantheons arranged around them. These gods were syncretically aligned with good and evil (or Democracy and Anarchy, if you prefer. Or vice versa, if you prefer.) And right now there are 100,000 people trying to exert their will on this meme, and an estimated 22 million more following its every fluctuation. It's breaking Twitch.tv and threatening the underpinnings of the internet. Legends are being born. Sociology textbooks will be written, all about the last nine days and the unknown number of days to come.

As a shaman in training, this entire ordeal scares the hell out of me and fascinates me at the same time. It's like peeking into a God factory and seeing it make sausage. We have cracked open the engine case of our fantasies and are fiddling with the wires. What a cool phenomena. I hope it doesn't end in tears.

I guess I must have some sort of life after all, or live under a rock, as this is the first I've heard of this. Then again, I don't online game at all. (shrug)

I've seen this process before. Every year at Desert Bus this same thing happens, albiet smaller by an order of magnatude.

I am convinced that wide-spread sleep deprivation on the part of the direct participants is a key factor.
